Nick Veale - Field Surveyor and Irish Consultant
Nick has a lifetime of experience as an ornithologist, and is a NIBA (Northern Ireland Birdwatchers Association) committee member.
Nick has worked for several environmental/ecological consultancies, and is a specialist in ornithology (Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), Common Bird Census (CBC), Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS), vantage point survey & bird strike assessment, terrestrial mammal survey, invasive weed survey & management, and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Nick has accreditations to assess bird collision, undertake bird surveys, produce band collision models, identify and manage Odonata species, work on construction and quarry sites, co-ordinate the management of invasive plants, and produce detailed risk assessments for fieldwork.
Nick led field surveys for the A5 Western Transport Corridor, which was the largest road scheme in Northern Ireland at over 88km. Survey elements included otter, badger, breeding birds, wintering farmland birds, Foyle floodplain appropriate assessment (Whooper Swan), WeBS, and smooth newts. From 2004-2008 Nick was a project ornithologist responsible for surveys at ten wind farm development sites throughout Ireland. Many of these schemes incorporated year round vantage point surveys, diurnal raptor surveys, and bird-strike assessments. Nick was the project ornithologist on the ESB’s 110Kv reinforcement project in Donegal. Nick was also a project ornithologist on a number of major road schemes in Ireland, which included the N14 Lifford-Manorcunningham road scheme, A4 Ballygawley-Dungannon dualling road scheme, and the A1/N1 Newry to Dundalk Link Road.
